Can You?
Can you ever unlearn the news of fatherhood? That moment when you realized another human being would walk upon this earth because of you. Can you unsee the mesmerizing image of the beating heart of your own child? A child that carries your cells, a part of you that will live on, hopefully long after you have departed this mortal coil.
Can you remember that precious moment when you were called “Daddy” for the first time, the smell of freshly washed curls with teddy in tow? Unknow the smiles and giggles that greeted you each evening? Oh, how your memory fails you…..
Those chubby fingers now form a young man’s grasp, but he is still your son; he remains the imprint you left in this life and the most precious legacy you will bequeath this world.
So, you will too recall the love of a mother for her children, deep and pure? The endless sacrifices she’ll make for them, in a world that has sacrificed little for her. Your child’s mother will never be that stranger on a subway, or that call you would rather ignore, for your past is forever entwined and will remain so long after your divorce is finalized.
She carried your babies and gave them life. Let not your bitterness blind you to the blessings that you both received. Children are the celebration of your union, a testament to a love that once was, even if now it stands in tatters. As the waves of time wash away what was not meant for you, parenthood endures. We remain the sculptors of our children’s lives, so let us place their needs before our own, as a testament to our love for them, if not for each other. Can you? Or perhaps more importantly, will you?
